PART ONE:

There was a time when I experienced architecture without thinking about it. Sometimes I can almost feel a particular door handle in my hand, a piece of metal shaped like the back of a spoon. I used to take hold of it when I went into my aunt’s garden. That door handle still seems to me like a special sign of entry into a world of different moods and smells.” Peter Zumthor – Thinking architecture.

Peter Zumthor

Peter Zumthor is a swiss architect born in 1943, (79 years), is known for his typical minimalistic and uncompromising work. growing up with a father working as a cabinet maker, exposed Zumthor to design and art at a small age, which led him to open his first firm in 1979, and since then he made many projects such as the Kolumba Diocesan Museum in 2007 and the Thermal Vals in 1996.

Peter Zumthor also wrote many books through his career listing: Thinking architecture and atmospheres. In his books, Zumthor writes about how his childhood, memory and emotions inspires him on his architecture. His writings, much like his architecture, instill an emotional quality and infuse an ethereal experience, felt by the depth of his words. He articulates his approach to design as a derivative of his memories and observations, bestowed upon his intuitive core, a quality that he has possessed since the beginning.

Personally, I think similarly to Zumthor s ideology. I believe the buildings and architectural construction are far beyond forms and design. It is a mixture of emotions and thoughts that should be reflected on the ground. Moreover, as he already listed in his book ” thinking architecture,” I believe that materials can assume a sensuous and poetic quality if one can find a meaningful situation to evoke its presence, which leads to giving life to architecture.

However, I also think this ideology should be considered since every material has its own emotional characteristics that will only make it fit in a particular way.

PART TWO:

the text “quiero ser un arquitecto”, is an objective text that Its goal is to inform us about the factors that affect our decision to become architects. It is suggested as a set of rules or suggestions that might be given to everyone whose studying architecture as one of their life’s goals.

Since for Campo Baeza, being an architect is a very complete career that has something of a doctor, a cook and a poet, a future architecture student, must be a person who has concerns, who is creative, who is an artist and who is also a technician.

After reading this book I became more motivated to be more efficient on my architectural studies, it also puts the light on the particularity and how special the architecture field and different then the other ones.

the book also point out that the structure is important, since without a good foundation, a building would not stand. and how important is what you see from the outside, since its what usually catches your attention, but without a good structure inside, what is outside would not make sense, in fact, it would be useless.
